Never too old to do things. Inspiration for older folks.
On The Seattle Times website, I found the article, Too old to learn code? That does not compute for some retirees by Vivian Marino. This article proves that you are never to old to learn something by giving an example of older people learning something. The retirees mentioned in the article start to learn code proving that you can never be too old to do something. The title catches my eye with its question and statement. The author gives us plenty of examples to prove her point and has pictures of people that have done it. Older people will be inspired to do more things because they are shown that they can do it. Younger generations might not underestimate the older population as much because they seem to be too old. The article seems to be in third person because it talks about other people and includes quotes from them. This message was sent because the older generation is discouraged to learn new things. Also they are told they are too old or frail.
Aladdin Theater Review
On The Seattle Times website, I found the article, Theater Review: 'Aladdin' dazzles at the Paramount by Misha Berson. This article gives you an idea of what you can look forward to in this performance. The picture caught my eye because it gave me a glimpse of the performance, which made me want to know more about it. The author tells us about the production 'Aladdin' and how good it is in the eyes of a critic. According to her, Disney hyped it up. In the article, Berson catches the reader attention with the pictures, and then talks about all the different people that are apart of it. She gives us a little tidbit of information on the people in the cast, in case we did not recognize them. Finally, she ends it telling us where Aladdin originally came from, which makes it more interesting. The article's intended audience would be people who like theater and the story 'Aladdin'. Younger people would find this article uninteresting and they would not read it, because this is mostly about people in the cast that they have never heard of. The article shows the performance in a positive light, complimenting how the cast did.
Where is the refund?
On The Seattle Times website, I found the article, I canceled my airline ticket within 24 hours. Where’s my refund? by Christopher Elliott. This article shows you that, even if you abide by the rules and cancel your plane ticket within 24 hours, it does not mean they will give you a refund. The author uses a person's experience as an example of how inefficient airline policies are. Then he tells you what they are suppose to do by stating rules that the airlines have. The author points out that airlines do not always follow this rule. This article is intended for people, who travel or are planning to travel. This is for adults because they are the most likely to pay for the trip. The author does get a response from an airline, which was also not following the refund rule. Also Elliott mentions that the government should make it a law for the airlines to refund the money spent on the ticket as long as they cancel it within 24 hours. The author did not seem to have prior experience with this and it was not a neutral argument.
What do you do when your mom poisons your girlfriend?
On The Seattle Times website, I found an article, My mom ‘poisoned’ my girlfriend — what do I do now? by Carolyn Hax. This article shows you just how far a mother will go and what should be done in this situation to win the girl back. The guy's mother thought the girlfriend was pretending that she was allergic to seafood. To prove that she was faking it the mother cooked the chicken in the same oil as the fish. The guy wants to know, if he can get his girl back. Hax and several other people give their opinion on the matter. The article starts out with the guys letter and then Hax's response. The author adds in other peoples thoughts as well. The author is bias because this is her opinion and what she thinks of the situation. She is not neutral towards the subject. Hax does believe that he can get the girl back, but what his mother did was terrible. Though as someone pointed out Cleo, the girlfriend, could sue the mother. The guy should be worried if she takes legal action.
What changed?
On The Seattle Times website, I discovered an article, Mass shootings: Why now? by Carol Byrne, Everett. This 80 year old is wondering how the world changed so much. The author remembers when a gun was used for hunting or as a soldier. Why must it be used in mass shootings to kill people? (innocent people) The kids dead before they could experience life. How could these people do this? This author does lean towards one side of the argument and definitely not neutral. There is personal experiences mentioned in this letter. This letter is addressed to society and the people who have taken other people's lives. Though in his time kids were sent to war, the Vietnam War, to serve the military and there were bomb drills, like there are now shooting drills. It has come to a point where students have to learn where to hide in case of a shooting. Society has gone downhill.
Squirrel Survival
On The Seattle Times website, I discovered an article, The sad tale of Hawthorne the squirrel, a Seattle police sergeant and good intentions gone wrong by Christine Clarridge. This article is about how a Seattle police sergeant nursed a squirrel back to health and named it Hawthorne. He was able to keep it for awhile, but was told he had to release it even though it was winter. Hawthorne died because of the cold and a injury to the leg after he was released. The police sergeant mourns the squirrel and wish that it was still alive. The article gives you a detail description of what happened, pictures, and videos of Hawthorne before his unfortunate death. The author does seem to be neutral in this subject and has no personal connection to it. She does a wonderful job of explaining what happened and that the squirrel will be missed. This shows you the goodness humanity can have towards nature and animals.
